New Skilled Occupations List
The Australian Government have introduced a new Skilled Occupations List (SOL) effective from 1st July 2010. The new Skilled Occupations List consists of 181 occupations which is much shorter than the previous list which consisted of 408 occupations.
It is a basic requirement for all new skills visa applications that your occupation is on the new Skilled Occupations List. Please see a complete listing of the new Skilled Occupations List below
The skilled migration stream is the greatest contributor to the overall Australian Immigration programme. It's aim is to attract to Australia migrants who are highly skilled and employable in occupations where it has been identified that there is a shortage in the Australian workforce.
The skilled migration stream consists of a number of complex skills visa classes most of which have 3 elements, an assessment of your level of skill in your occupation, basic personal attributes, and the "points test".
Skilled Immigration Points Test
Nearly all of the visas for skilled immigration to Australia are subject to the Points Test. With this Points Test you are awarded points for various attributes which include age, English language ability, amount of relevant work experience etc. You have to achieve a total that is equal to or greater than the pass mark in order for your application for a skills visa to be considered.
