Increased Rollover Period for Retirement Visa Holders
7 November 2005
Holders of temporary Retirement visas (subclass 410) will be able to rollover (renew) their Retirement visa for four years instead of 2 years after the initial visa currently, Senator Amanda Vanstone, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, announced today.
Current Retirement visa holders who successfully apply to rollover their visa on or after 1 December 2005 will be provided with a further four year stay in Australia. Some 5000 retirees will benefit from this change.
'Many overseas retirees have approached me with concerns about the uncertainties of a shorter two-year rollover visa. Increasing the visa period to four years helps ease these concerns,' Senator Vanstone said.
The change is the latest in a series of enhancements to the Retirement visa. Visa holders can continue to rollover their visa indefinitely, subject only to meeting streamlined requirements.
In July 2005, the new Investor Retirement visa was introduced. At the same time, the current Retirement visa closed to new applicants. Existing Retirement visa holders, however, have not been affected by this closure. To find out more about the Investor Retirement visa visit our Retirement in Australia page.
'I will keep looking at ways to support overseas retirees enjoy an active and fulfilling life in Australia that does not impact Australia's health and welfare budgets,' the Minister said.
